Still Crazy (for her)

Jeanette and I have dropped off the grid and onto Monarch Beach (without kids) for a few days to celebrate our 15th wedding anniversary. Pretty, charming, smart and downright fun, she’s the reason I haven’t taken to living in a cave, writing a manifesto.

We met a few months after I graduated from USC. I was kind of rudderless at the time, not sure what I wanted to do next and not really minding. I planned to check out for a year and took a job as an usher at the Los Angeles Music Center. Jeanette was a senior usher. She was also a friend of a friend. Between working on “her zone” in one of the center’s various houses, or watching her drink coffee late at night in our circle of friends, something about her struck me.

My rational mind nearly counseled me against asking her out. “She’s not your type,” it would say. “You want an Italian. You plan to date an actress. That’s the plan.” But then my free-spirited right brain would kick in. “She’s awfully cute,” it would say. “What could it hurt to take her to dinner? Go on, look at the way she smiles when you make that pathetic little joke. Look, she’s actually laughing — and it isn’t a pity laugh.”

The rest was history. We were married a little over a year later. And after we settled in to our new life together a funny thing happened: I started writing more, and the writing got better, and I enjoyed it. All the time I spent in college toiling over what I wrote seemed a distant memory. Now, I wrote without any kind of daunting pressure. I credit Jeanette for that. She encouraged me, but never judged or pried. She lent me a confidence, and does to this day. That’s why I nearly always suspect my rational mind. What did he know?
